What are facet joint injections?

Facet joint injections are a minimally invasive procedure used to relieve severe back or neck pain. During this type of treatment, your Pain & Anesthesia Care provider administers a combination of local anesthesia and pain medication into one or several facet joints.

Facet joints are small hinges located on the sides of each vertebra. They allow for range-of-motion and provide support and stability for your spine. Facet joints are incredibly tough, but they aren’t invincible. Arthritis, sports-related injuries, and automobile accidents may result in facet joint pain or inflammation.

How are facet joint injections used?

How do facet joint injections work?

Pain & Anesthesia Care administers facet joint injections on-site in their warm, welcoming offices. At the start of your appointment, you change into a gown and lie face down on an exam table.

Once you’re in position, your provider uses fluoroscopy or a CT scanner to guide the needle through your skin and into one (or several) facet joints. After making contact with your facet joint, your provider injects a solution of anesthetic and anti-inflammatory medication into the affected joint. The process is quick and painless.

Following your injection, your provider applies pressure on the site to prevent bleeding and covers the area with gauze and a bandage. You’re then taken to an observation area to rest. 

What is the recovery process like following a facet joint injection?

Following your facet joint injections, your provider gives you a list of recovery instructions. In the first 24 hours after your appointment, get plenty of rest and avoid strenuous activity like lifting or exercise. 

As the anesthesia wears off, it’s reasonable to experience some mild irritation or discomfort. You might also experience elevated blood pressure or fluid retention due to the anti-inflammatory medication. Follow your provider’s instructions carefully, and you should feel back to normal within 48 hours.
